Wakaura Tenmangu is a heavenly shrine enshrined in the scenic Wakaura. It enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and is a historic shrine visited by many scholars and literary figures since ancient times. Wakaura has been known since the Manyoshu era as a beautiful scenic spot and utamakura. The view from Tenmangu is exceptional. As one climbs the stone steps, a spectacular panorama of the Kii Channel unfolds, refreshing the hearts of visitors. Through the virtues of Michizane, not only academic achievement but also the advancement of literature and arts can be prayed for. During the plum blossom season, the shrine grounds are beautifully adorned, allowing visitors to deepen their feelings toward Michizane.
