History

Byakko

Higashiguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja has long served as an important base for Fuji pilgrimage as the starting point of the Susodo climbing trail on the eastern side of Mount Fuji. Founded during the Heian period, this is a venerable Sengen Jinja enshrining Konohanasakuya-hime, the divine spirit of Mount Fuji. The Susodo trail is one of the oldest climbing routes to Mount Fuji, and countless ascetics and believers of Fuji faith have challenged the sacred peak from this point. The majestic form of Mount Fuji seen from the shrine grounds is extraordinary, a special place where one can simultaneously feel the dignity and compassion of the mountain deity.
