History
Ikonahime Nomikoto Jinja is a beautiful shrine dedicated to the goddess of the sea, situated in Shiraihama in Shimoda. Enshrining Ikonahimemei, who is said to have created the Izu Islands, it is known for its benefits of matchmaking, safe childbirth, and maritime safety. Located on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful Shiraihama coastline, the scenic views are also part of the charm of visiting. With a long history of protecting the maritime safety of the Izu Peninsula and collecting the faith of fishermen and those involved with the sea, it is also cherished as a guardian deity of women, and many women visit to pay their respects.
