History
Joshoji, officially Jitokuzan Joshoji, is a Soto Zen temple located in Akabane-nishi, Kita-ku, Tokyo. According to tradition, the warlord Ota Dokan established this temple in 1456 when he set up camp here during the construction of Edo Castle, praying for victory in battle. The name Joshoji means Temple of Still Victory, reflecting the warrior spirit of its founder. In 1477, during the Nagao Kageharu Rebellion, Dokan reportedly used this temple as his headquarters. The principal image is Shakyamuni Buddha, and a wooden seated statue of Ota Dokan, designated a Kita Ward tangible cultural property, is enshrined here.
