Hongyoji Temple, formally known as Chokyuzan Hongyoji, is a Nichiren Buddhist temple located in Nishinippori, Arakawa Ward, Tokyo. According to tradition, it was founded in 1526 (Daiei 6) with Ota Suketaka as patron and the monk Nichigen as founding priest. The principal object of worship is the Ittoryoson Shibosat su mandala. The former head temple was Heizazan Hooonji, belonging to the Ushio lineage. During the Edo period it was renowned as a center of Buddhist learning, producing many scholar monks. The temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times due to great fires of Edo, and the present main hall dates from the early Showa period.
