History

Byakko

Shin-Koiwa Katori Jinja, enshrined in the former West-Komaecho village, venerates Futodama-no-Mikoto (Futsunushi-no-Mikoto), a deity of martial arts and protection, transferred from Katori Grand Shrine. The founding date is unknown, though a rebuilding in 1617 is recorded. According to tradition, the famed warlord Ota Dokan once moored his boat here and prayed for safe passage in the mid-15th century. In 1719, Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune visited during a falconry excursion; the green vegetable served to him was so well received that he named it Komatsuna (Komacho greens) after the locale, a legend still celebrated at the shrine today.
