History

Kaijusen-ji is an ancient temple of the Shingon Chisan school, situated on the slopes of Mikami-yama (Kaijuzan) in Kamo-cho, Kizugawa, Kyoto, with the mountain name Fudarakusan. According to tradition, it was founded in 735 (Tenpyo 7) by the monk Roben as Fujiosan Kannnji by imperial command of Emperor Shomu, and was later called Kaijusen-ji. The entire mountain burned in 1137 (Hoen 3), and in 1208 (Jogen 2) it was revived by the eminent monk Gedatsu Shonin (Jokei). His disciple Kakushin completed the five-story pagoda in 1214 (Kenpo 2); this pagoda is designated a National Treasure and is a rare surviving Kamakura-period structure with its distinctive lower eave (mokoshi). The temple also holds many Important Cultural Properties including the Monju-do.
