Shushoin is a Nichiren sect temple in Nishi-Nippori, Arakawa, Tokyo. Founded in 1575 (Tensho 3), it relocated to its current site during the Genroku era. The area was once called "Higurashi no Sato," and together with Seiunji and Myoryuji, the temple was known as one of the "Flower-Viewing Temples" that drew pleasure-seekers to admire the seasonal blossoms. As one of the Yanaka Seven Lucky Gods temples, it enshrines Hotei, the god of good fortune and contentment. A series of paintings depicting Hotei adorns its walls, welcoming all visitors with warmth and gentle humor.
