History

Byakko

Tenon-ji is a temple of the Rinzai Myoshinji school in Okazaki, Aichi, founded around 1362 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi shogunate, fulfilling the dying wish of Ashikaga Takauji who had prayed to the principal image, Enmei Jizo, before the Battle of Yagawara. After flourishing under shogunal patronage, the temple declined during the Onin War but was revived in the Sengoku period under the Okudaira clan. In 1575, Tokugawa Ieyasu reportedly stayed here on his way to the Battle of Nagashino. The main hall and gate are designated National Important Cultural Properties.
