Joko-ji (Kinoshitakawakusurishi)

Jokoji, popularly known as Kinegawa Yakushi, is a Tendai Buddhist temple located in Higashi-Yotsugi, Katsushika Ward, Tokyo. According to temple tradition, it was founded in 834 by the monk Ennin (Jikaku Daishi), who, while traveling through the eastern provinces, witnessed a plague ravaging the area and carved an image of Yakushi Nyorai to offer prayers for healing. The principal image, Yakushi Nyorai, is a hidden Buddha revealed only once every twelve years in the Year of the Horse. During the Edo period, the temple received a land grant from Tokugawa Iemitsu.
