History

Byakko

Machida Tenmangu is enshrined in the center of Machida and is a Tenmangu shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of scholarship. From the Edo period, it has gathered the faith of local people, and in particular, children studying at temple schools came to worship praying for academic success. In modern times, it has been cherished by students throughout Machida as a shrine where they pray for exam success, and its grounds where plum blossoms bloom beautifully are loved by many. As Machida has developed as a commercial city, it gathers faith not only for academic pursuits but also for commercial prosperity.
