Shin Yakushi-ji is said to have been founded by Empress Komyo to pray for the recovery of Emperor Shomu's eye ailment, and it is a sacred site of Yakushi Nyorai. For over thirteen centuries since the Nara period, it has gathered devoted faith from people praying for healing from illness. The twelve divine generals standing statues that guard the principal image of Yakushi Nyorai Seated Statue are renowned as National Treasures, with the imposing expression of Vasantara Deva being particularly striking. As an ancient temple standing in the quiet residential area of Nara, many visitors come to pray for health of body and mind.
