History

Gyokurinji Temple in Yanaka, Taito Ward, Tokyo, is a Soto Zen temple founded in Kanda in 1603 by the monk Gukei, who enjoyed the confidence of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The temple relocated to its current site in Yanaka in 1630. Throughout the Edo period it flourished as a temple with a large congregation. It is also known as one of the Yanaka Shichifukujin pilgrimage sites, enshrining the deity Hotei, and draws many visitors during the New Year for the Seven Gods of Fortune circuit.
