History

Byakko

Ichinomiya-ji is a renowned temple known as the eighty-third sacred site of the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage. It has a history of prosperity as the subsidiary temple of Tamura Jinja, the primary shrine of Sanuki Province. As its name suggests, it has long been revered as the most prestigious temple in this region. As a sacred site associated with Kobo Daishi Kukai, it is a holy place visited by many pilgrims. While retaining vestiges of the syncretic religion era of Shintoism and Buddhism, it continues to serve as a spiritual support for people today—a temple filled with history and tradition.
