History
Kōonji is a temple associated with the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Place pilgrimage route in Saijō. True to its name, this temple is characterized by its beautiful grounds surrounded by fragrant flowers. It offers healing to the tired body and spirit of pilgrims on their journey—truly a garden of peace. Flowers that bloom with each season welcome visitors, and it is a special place where one can feel the beauty of nature and the compassion of Buddha. 本堂と大師堂が一体の巨大コンクリート造りの大聖堂（高さ16m・座席620席以上）で、座ったままで参拝できる全国でも異例の構造です。2階に上がると正面に黄金の大日如来・不動明王・子安大師が安置されています。
参拝はまず大聖堂外の大型ローソク・線香立てに火を灯してから、右側の外階段で2階へ上がります。コンサートホールのような堂内ですが、正面の内陣に向かって通常通りの作法で参拝します。
境内東側に無料駐車場（約100台）があります。いよ小松ICから国道11号を西条方面へ進み「香園寺」交差点を右折、約370m先に到着します。道路から境内がわかりにくいため交差点名を目印にしてください。
「子安の大師さん」として知られ、子安大師像は左手に赤子を抱く珍しい姿です。安産・子育ての霊験で遍路以外の地元参拝者も多く訪れます。
