Tsukiji Hongwanji is formally a temple of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha sect, and it captivates many people through its distinctive architecture. The present main hall, rebuilt in Showa 9 (1934) after the Great Kanto Earthquake, features a remarkably unusual design incorporating ancient Indian architectural styles. The designer was Professor Ito Chuta of Tokyo Imperial University, and it is known as a unique example in the history of Japanese temple architecture. Rooted in the Tsukiji district, it has long served as a spiritual sanctuary for many people. Its beautiful architectural beauty deeply moves all who behold it.
