History

Byakko

Komyoin is a temple of the Shingon Buzan sect located in Kamiogi, Suginami, Tokyo. Said to have been founded before the Nara period (pre-710), it is one of the oldest temples in Suginami Ward. The temple's formal name is Jiunzan Ogijera Komyoin, and it is traditionally credited as the origin of the place name Ogikubo, later a major station name. The principal image is the Thousand-Armed Kannon (Senju Kannon). Two cultural properties of Suginami Ward are preserved on the grounds: a seated wooden Thousand-Armed Kannon statue and a stone water basin dated to Tenna 2 (1682). Long known locally as the Yakushisan of Ogikubo, the temple has been venerated for blessings of healing and longevity.
