History

Byakko

Known formally as Hinata-san Koto-ji, this Nichiren Buddhist temple in Sumida Ward, Tokyo traces its founding to 1631 (Kan'ei 8), established by the priest Nicho with Lady Koto-ji-dono Hinata-ni as patron. The principal object of worship is a mandala written by the hand of Saint Nichiren himself. The temple has endured repeated catastrophes — the Great Meireki Fire of 1657, the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and the Tokyo air raids of 1945 — yet was faithfully rebuilt each time through the devotion of its parishioners.
