History

Byakko

Hofu Tenmangu is one of Japan's three great Tenman shrines, enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning. It is also known as "Japan's first Tenman shrine" because Michizane rested at this location on his way to Dazaifu. The shrine grounds are graced with beautiful plum blossoms that evoke the memory of Michizane. The Shunpu-ro gate tower is also noteworthy, and many students and those pursuing learning visit to pray for success in examinations, making it truly a sacred place of learning.
