It is an ancient shrine said to have been founded during the Heian period and has long been revered as the chief guardian deity of Kumamoto. In particular, the annual autumn festival in September, "Fujisaki-gu Aki Kisai Reisetsu," is famous as one of Kumamoto's three great festivals. Enshrining Emperor Ojin as the principal deity, it is visited by many believers seeking martial prowess and victory, as well as protection from calamity.
