History

Byakko

Horin-ji in Nakano Ward, Tokyo, is an ancient temple of the Nichiren school, founded in 1606 (Keicho 11) by the monk Nichiken. The temple transmits the teachings of the Lotus Sutra and has long been cherished as a sacred site by local residents. During the Edo period, it received devout patronage from the feudal lord governing Nakano. The precincts include a fine main hall and numerous Buddhist statues. Known by the mountain name Mannen-zan, the temple continues to perform esoteric prayer rituals, welcoming many believers who seek peace of mind. Its serene grounds offer a healing space apart from the urban hustle.
