History

Byakko

Hiratsuka Shrine is said to have originated when the Toshima clan enshrined the three Minamoto brothers — Yoshiie, Yoshitsuna, and Yoshimitsu — at the site where the brothers had lodged on their return from the Later Three-Year War (1083–1087). Yoshiie presented a suit of armor as a token of gratitude, which was buried beneath a mound — the so-called 'hiratsuka' (flat mound) that gave the area its name. In the Edo period, Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu donated fifty koku of land after praying here for recovery from illness, a remarkable act of shogunal patronage. The shrine continues to serve as the spiritual heart of the Kamidesato community in Kita Ward.
