History
Zenyo-ji is a Tendai sect Buddhist temple in Nishisugamo, Toshima-ku, Tokyo. Its mountain name is Yakuozan and the principal image is Yakushi Nyorai. Founded during the Tencho era (824–833), tradition holds that Jikaku Daishi Ennin was its founding priest. The temple has long gathered the faith of Sugamo residents, receiving a shogunal landholding during the Edo period. In the precincts stands the Yogo-seki, a sacred stone said to heal illness when touched. The grave of Ogata Kenzan is designated a Tokyo Metropolitan historical site. Having survived multiple fires, this ancient temple has grown alongside its community.
