History

Banshoinkounji is a Soto Zen temple located in Kamitakada, Nakano Ward, Tokyo, with the mountain name Ryuhozan. Banshouin was founded in 1598 in Kojimachi by Lady Oman, a concubine of Tokugawa Ieyasu, while Kounji was established in 1629 in Shitaya by Tokugawa Yoshinao, the first lord of the Owari domain. The two temples merged in 1948 to form the present institution. The temple grounds contain the grave of Kira Yoshinaka, famous for his role in the Ako Incident (the story of the 47 ronin), which draws many visitors.
