History

Byakko

Hashihime Shrine in Uji traces its origins to 646, when the goddess Seoritsu-hime, enshrined upstream in Sakuraya, was moved to protect the newly constructed Uji Bridge. The shrine was placed within the grounds of Hojouin Jokkoji temple and later moved to the western end of the bridge. After being swept away in a flood in 1870, it was relocated to its current site in 1906. Dedicated to Seoritsu-hime or Hashihime, guardian of the bridge connecting two shores, it has long been revered for blessings of good relationships and romantic fulfillment.
