Eino Shrine (also written Eino Tsurugi Shrine) is located on the Shiranui Sea coast in Ueki City, Kumamoto. Founded in 713 (Wado 6) by imperial decree of Empress Genmei for the protection of the provinces, the shrine enshrines Watatsumi-no-kami (Tamayori-hime-no-mikoto) as the principal deity. According to legend, the sea god arrived riding on the back of a giant stingray and came to rest here; the site where the shrine stands corresponds to the tail of that stingray, giving the place its name Eino (stingray tail). The shrine is widely known for its torii standing in the sea facing the Shiranui Sea, and has long been revered especially for curing gastrointestinal ailments. The Hassaku Festival held on the first day of the eighth lunar month coincides with the legendary appearance of Shiranui.
