Hozoji Temple, formally known as Komyozan Hozoji, is a Tendai Buddhist temple founded in 857 CE by the revered monk Ennin (Jikaku Daishi). Located in central Utsunomiya, its principal images are Amida Nyorai and Fugen Bosatsu. The temple holds a seated statue of Ennin carved from a thousand-year-old sandalwood tree he brought back from Tang China, as well as a bronze bell said to have been built by the Utsunomiya clan. Several cultural properties are preserved within the grounds.
