History

Byakko

Suwa Jinja in Nishi-Nippori, Arakawa Ward, serves as the guardian shrine of the Niibori (Nippori) and Yanaka districts. As part of the Suwa faith network centered on Suwa Taisha in Nagano, it enshrines Takeminakata-no-Mikoto. The shrine is traditionally said to have been founded in 1202 (Genkyu 2), and historical documents and a stone torii gate designated as tangible cultural properties of Arakawa Ward have been preserved here. The annual festival in August fills the precinct and surrounding streets with stalls and celebrants, while the Goshinko Festival held once every three years features a procession of the main portable shrine through the neighborhood.
