Hanzabo is a sacred site of mountain ascetic training located on the mid-slope of Mount Tsukuba. Formally a subsidiary shrine of Tsukuba Jinja, it enshrines the great deva Tengu Hanzabo. Revered as a holy site where practitioners of Shugendo conducted their rigorous training, it has long been known as a place of miraculous spiritual efficacy. The tengu is known as a deity of fire prevention and possesses strong power to ward off calamities and disasters. Embraced by the rich natural surroundings of Mount Tsukuba, this place has become a special pilgrimage site for those seeking purification of body and spirit, as well as good fortune.
