History

Byakko

Kioō Jinja is enshrined in Kabukichō, Shinjuku Ward, and is a rare shrine nationwide bearing the name of "oni" (demons). It is said to have been founded during the Edo period with prayers for the cessation of epidemics. Though named "oni," this does not refer to malevolent demons, but rather to protective deities that ward off illness and misfortune. While situated in Kabukichō, Japan's premier entertainment district, its serene grounds impart a mysterious sense of peace to all who visit. Even today, it remains a unique shrine where many come to pray for protection from calamity and healing from illness.
