Ishihama Jinja is enshrined along the Sumida River and is said to have been founded in the first year of Emperor Shomu's Jinki era (724), making it one of the oldest shrines in Tokyo. During the Edo period, it was used as a rest stop when the shogun went falconing, and is also famous for having the 'oldest Mount Fuji mound in Edo.' As the tutelary deity of the region that prospered through water transportation on the Sumida River, it gathered the faith of sailors and merchants. Within its grounds stands the oldest Mount Fuji mound in Tokyo, and combined with faith in Mount Fuji, it is said to offer many blessings. In modern times, it remains beloved as a shrine full of downtown atmosphere.
