History

Byakko

Chohoji is a Tendai Buddhist temple in Kainan, Wakayama, founded in 1000 (Choho 2) with the mountain name Keitokuzan. The principal image is Shakyamuni Buddha, and the founding priest is said to be Shoku Shonin. Three of its structures — the main hall, the multi-tiered pagoda, and the main gate — are designated National Treasures. The temple also serves as the mausoleum of successive lords of the Kishu Tokugawa domain, a site designated as a National Historic Site. It has long been revered by the imperial court and warrior class, quietly maintaining its flame of Dharma to this day.
