Tenjin-no-Mori Tenmangu is enshrined in Kishisato Higashi, Nishinari-ku, Osaka. The site is traditionally said to be where Sugawara no Michizane rested on his way to exile in Dazaifu in 901. The shrine was formally founded during the Oei era (1394-1428) by enshrining a divided spirit from Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto. During the Sengoku period, the tea master Takeno Joo cherished the spring water on the grounds and resided nearby, giving rise to the alternate name Shoo-no-Mori Tenmangu. Toyotomi Hideyoshi is also said to have visited to pray for a safe birth for Yodogimi. The approach to the shrine gave its name to the Tengachaya (Tenkacha-ya) district, still known today.
