History

Byakko

The Hachiman Jinja enshrined in Amanuma, Suginami Ward is a venerable shrine dedicated to Emperor Ōjin. It is said to have been invoked by a Minamoto clan warrior during the Kamakura period and has been revered as a deity of martial success by the samurai class. During the Edo period, as the tutelary shrine of this region which was then a farming village, it gathered the faith of people praying for abundant harvests. Though the area underwent significant changes with urbanization after the Meiji period, the shrine has remained a cherished spiritual support for the community. Even today, traditional community festivals are held, and it has become a welcoming shrine visited by many people from children to adults.
