Sugawara Tenmangu enshrines Sugawara Michizane, renowned as the kami of learning. Nara is said to be the birthplace of Sugawara Michizane, and the Tenmangu here is particularly noteworthy in its origins, attracting the faith of many students. Michizane was a distinguished scholar and statesman of the Heian period, and his deep learning and literary talent are still spoken of today. At this shrine, through the blessings of Michizane, worshippers pray not only for academic success and passing exams, but also for improvement in the arts and calligraphy. During examination season the shrine is especially busy with many worshippers, and it warmly watches over everyone's wishes.
