History
Standing in the temple district of Yanaka, Taito, Tokyo, Ichijoji is a temple of the Nichiren sect with the mountain name Daiho-zan. Founded in 1615 by the monk Nichyo, it was originally built near Kanda Surugadai before being relocated to present-day Yanaka in 1637 as part of the expansion of Edo Castle. Its principal deity is Shakyamuni Buddha. Within the grounds lies the tomb of the Confucian scholar Ota Kinjojo, designated as a historic site by Tokyo Metropolis. For over four centuries, the temple has quietly sustained the faith of the Yanaka community.
