Jomaki-in

Joboкuин (Jobokuin) is a temple of the Rinzai Zen sect, Kenchoji branch, located in Daimoncho, Higashikurume City, Tokyo. Founded in 1374 (Oan 7) with Oishi Sadashige — a member of the Ashikaga clan's lineage — as patron, and Kettodo Nosho Zenji as founding priest. Originally a Shingon Buddhist temple, it was revived as a Rinzai Zen temple when Master Kettodo was invited. The principal image is Shakyamuni Buddha. From the medieval through early modern periods, the temple controlled extensive temple lands and many sub-temples, flourishing as a center of Rinzai Buddhism in this region. During the Edo period, the shogunate granted it a red-seal document guaranteeing its temple landholdings. The precincts are graced with ancient trees hundreds of years old, testifying to the temple's long heritage.
