History

Byakko

Akatsuka Hikawa Jinja is an ancient shrine enshrining Susanoo-no-Mikoto, Kushiinadahime-no-Mikoto, and Okuninushi-no-Mikoto in Itabashi, Tokyo. Tradition holds that during the reign of Emperor Keiko, Yamato Takeru rested here during his eastern campaigns and enshrined Susanoo. Records also show that Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and his son Yoshiie prayed for victory here during the Oshu campaign. In the Edo period, it served as the chief guardian shrine of Akatsuka village and received a vermillion-seal land grant from the Tokugawa shogunate. The grand autumn festival continues to draw devoted worshippers each year.
