Inokashira Benzaiten is a beautiful shrine situated on a small island in the center of Inokashira Pond. It is said to have been founded during the Heian period by Great Master Jikaku Ennin, and has long been venerated as a deity of water and the performing arts. During the Edo period, it received devoted protection from the Tokugawa family and was particularly regarded as a deity for rain prayers. Benzaiten is also known as a goddess of music, learning, and wealth, and there are historical accounts of many artists and literati seeking creative inspiration at this shrine. Today, surrounded by the beautiful nature of Inokashira Park, it remains one of Tokyo's premier power spots visited by countless devotees.
