Mangan-ji

Manganji is said to have been founded in the late Heian period, and was reestablished in 1470 as the prayer temple of the Kira clan, with Joei as the reviving founder. In the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate granted the temple a fief of thirteen koku and the temple was renamed from "Iozan" to "Chikozan," with the principal image changed from Yakushi Nyorai to Dainichi Nyorai of the Diamond World. Its Hitokoto Jizou, said to grant any single earnest wish, is one of Japan's three great Jizo statues. The affiliated Todoroki Fudoson is the 17th temple of the Kanto Thirty-Six Fudo Pilgrimage. The grave of calligrapher Hosoi Kotsuu is a nationally designated historic site.
