History

Byakko

Sasutahiko Shrine, located in Kataoka-cho, Wakayama City, is an Engishiki-ranked shrine known by the popular name "Oka-no-Miya." The principal deity is Sasutahiko no Okami, venerated since ancient times as the guardian of this land. In the early Edo period, the future eighth shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune underwent the hiroi-oya ceremony here, earning the shrine the additional title "Yoshimune-ko Hiroi-oya Shrine." Designated a prefectural shrine under the modern social ranking system, it continues to serve as the tutelary shrine for the local community.
