History

Zuirinji Temple, with the mountain name Jiun-zan, is a head temple (yuisho-in) of the Nichiren sect located in Yanaka, Taito Ward, Tokyo. As Tokugawa Ieyasu established his base in Edo, the temple relocated near Edo Castle in 1591 (Tensho 19), then moved to its current site in Yanaka in 1626 (Kanei 3). Counted among the Edo Jusoshi (Ten Principal Images of the Founder in Edo), Zuirinji flourished under shogunal patronage. Its former head temple was Minobusan Kuonji, and it belongs to the Ushio-shi lineage.
