motomura jinja ( miso tenjin )

Motomura Shrine, known as Miso Tenjin, is located in Oe Honmachi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. The enshrined deity is Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning. According to tradition, when Michizane was exiled to Dazaifu during the Heian period, he stopped here and received an offering of miso from local villagers, giving rise to the name Miso Tenjin. The shrine has long been revered by brewing and merchant tradespeople, and continues to draw visitors seeking academic success, business prosperity, and protection from misfortune.
