Susanoo Jinja is an ancient shrine located in Minami Senjuku, Arakawa Ward, with Susanoo no Mikoto as its principal deity. It is said to have been founded in the 14th year of Enryaku (795) during the Heian period, possessing a long history of over a thousand years. During the Edo period, it was beloved as the 'Tenno-sama' and was particularly revered by many people as a shrine for protection against epidemics. The shrine grounds feature a magnificent Fuji mound and have played an important role as a center of Fuji faith. Today, it continues to be cherished as both a tutelary shrine of the community and as a precious shrine that tells the story of downtown Tokyo's history.
