History
Kumano Jinja, enshrined in Kumano-cho, is a shrine where the divine spirits of the Kumano Sanzan of Kii were invited and enshrined, and has long been revered as Kumano Gongen. With Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto as its principal deities, it is known as a spiritually efficacious shrine of resurrection and renewal. Kumano faith flourished among the nobility and samurai from the Heian period onward, later spreading among the common people. It is believed that visiting the shrine during life's milestones and difficult times grants one renewed strength. Even today, many people visit seeking spiritual support.
