Byakko

This is the head temple of the Shingon School founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai, the holiest place of the Koya Shingon sect. It was opened with imperial permission from Emperor Saga in 816 during the early Heian period, and for over 1,200 years has served as the fundamental temple of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. It has gathered the faith of many feudal lords and daimyo, including Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the Tokugawa family, and houses numerous precious cultural properties. The grounds, spreading at an altitude of approximately 800 meters, truly deserve to be called a celestial sacred realm, filled with a divine atmosphere. Today, visitors from throughout the nation continue to come and experience the deep teachings of Buddhism and the spiritual power of the mountains.
