Chomei-ji

Chomyo-ji, formally known as Nissho-zan Chomyo-ji, is a Nichiren Buddhist temple located in Yanaka, Taito Ward, Tokyo. It was reportedly founded in 1613 (Keicho 18). Its former head temple was Honkoku-ji (Rokujō school). The temple has deep ties to the Yamada Asaemon family, who served as executioners at the Kodenmacho prison during the Edo period. It is also known for the graves of Yoshida Shoin, Hashimoto Sanai, and others who were executed during the Ansei Purge at the end of the Edo period. The precinct also holds the grave of Chocho, daughter of Aizu domain samurai Hirata Montojuro. In spring, the weeping cherry tree adorns the grounds.
