History

Byakko

Ryugenji is an independent Soto-derived temple in Osawa, Mitaka City, Tokyo, bearing the mountain name Osawa-san. It was founded in 1644 (Shōho 1) by the monk Kazan Tōden. The temple stands along the Hitomichi-kaido road, and during the Edo period it served as a resting place for the shogun on his falconry excursions outside the city. The temple is particularly known as the burial site of Kondo Isami, commander of the Shinsengumi. After his execution at Itabashi, his family retrieved the body and interred it here, and many visitors still come to pay their respects.
