History

Byakko

This is a historic shrine known as the site of the "Cock-Fighting Divine Ritual" famous in the Genpei War. During the late Heian period, Kumano Betto Tanmasu held a cock-fight between red and white birds to divine whether he should support the Genji or the Heike. The white cock won, and he chose to support the Genji. This divine rite is said to have determined the course of the Genpei War, making it truly a turning point in history. Within the grounds stands a monument honoring Tanmasu who supported the Genji, and the shrine is popular among history enthusiasts. Today, those facing important decisions or seeking to influence the outcome of competitions come to pray for the shrine's divine protection.
