Sainen-ji

Saineniji is a Jodo sect temple located in Wakaba, Shinjuku, Tokyo, known by the mountain name Senshosan. It was founded during the Tensho era by Hattori Hanzo Masanari, a loyal retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu and one of the Tokugawa Sixteen Generals, to memorialize Nobuyasu, Ieyasu's eldest son whom Hanzo had served as guardian. The temple grounds contain the graves of the Hattori clan, and Hanzo's tombstone remains a historically significant monument. A memorial pagoda dedicated to Nobuyasu also survives, silently bearing witness to the loyalty and sorrow of a samurai's life.
